Welcome to the 2020 Super Metroid Multi-Category Tournament!

Sign up at https://tiny.cc/smtourneysignup! Runners of all skill levels are encouraged to compete! Signups close on March 13th at midnight EST time, and the first week of matches will begin on March 16th (Monday).

Prior to the tournament, we will be confirming your participation and getting players to join the Discord server [https://discord.gg/ZkudS2K]. Discord will be the official medium used to communicate with players and schedule races.  If you cannot use Discord but would still like to participate in the tournament, please contact an organizer at the contact information listed at the bottom of the rules.
 

FORMAT

The tournament will be swiss format with each match being 1 race. Match pairings for the first round will be determined by seed (see seeding procedure below).  Seeding is determined on the day of the signup cutoff (March 13th at Midnight EST), so you have until then to increase your PBs should you wish.
 

The number of swiss rounds will be determined by the number of entrants but there will likely be between 6 and 8 rounds. After all swiss rounds are complete the top 16 racers will be seeded into a single elimination bracket.

Three of these categories will be available each round, with players taking turns to veto 1 category (higher seed chooses whether to veto first or defer to their opponent). The 1 remaining category will be raced. The three available categories for each week will be the same for all players and will be set before the tournament begins. The category breakdown for each week will be revealed at least 1 week before the tournament begins (Sunday March 8th at the latest). An announcement will be made in the tournament Discord as to when the reveal will take place.


SEEDING PROCEDURE

Seeding will consider runners’ PBs in each of the following three “core” categories:  Any%, 100%, and GT Classic.  Runners will be ranked among all participants (an internal leaderboard visible on the spreadsheet) for all 3 categories, and players with the lowest sum of rank will be awarded a better (lower) seed.  In the event of a tie, sum of time from racers PBs will be used to decide the higher seed (the lower the sum of time, the better the seed). In the event that a player does not have a PB (or does not make organizers aware of their PB) in a category, that runner will be given a rank of 1+the number of runners with PBs in that category for purposes of calculating a seed.  In the event of further ties, seeds will be determined randomly to differentiate between tied players.


TOP 16

The top 16 will be a single elimination reverse-seeded bracket (1 v 16, 2 v 15 etc.) based on the final standings after the swiss rounds. In the event of a tie for a place in the playoff bracket, a tiebreaker race will take place, which will be a randomly selected category from the following: Any%, 100%, GT Classic. Racers who make it in from the playoff race will then be seeded in the playoff by their initial seed at the start of the tournament.

Each round of the top 16 will be best of 3, and the categories will be determined as follows:
1. Each runner will veto a category. The higher seeded runner will choose to either take the first veto, or they may defer to their opponent.
2. The higher seed chooses the category for race 1 from the remaining 5 categories.
3. The lower seed chooses the category for race 2 from the remaining 4 categories.
4. If game 3 is necessary, the category for race 3 is determined randomly from the 3 remaining categories.


PRIZE POOL

We're pleased to announce that Mega Cat Studios and Bawls Guarana will be jointly sponsoring the 2020 Super Metroid multi-category tournament and will together provide a $750 prize pool to be split between the top 8 participants in the tournament. The prize pool will be split as follows:

1st Place: $300
2nd Place: $150
3rd Place: $125
4th Place: $75
5th-8th Place: $25

RULES

Players will use SpeedRunsLive to time and record their race.  The time listed on SRL is the official time for the match. Races will use standard SRL rules. As well as the following:
 
    All players are required to stream.

    All files, unless otherwise noted should start at 0:00 with the intro sequence completed so play begins in the Ceres station.

    Players may use cartridge, flashcart, or emulator (except SNES9x 1.43 and ZSNES which are banned).

    All categories are No Major Glitches. For this tournament Major Glitches include (but are not limited to) glitches that take the  player out of bounds, and spacetime beam (even in GT Classic). If you're unsure whether a glitch is considered "Major" ask an organizer.

    Gold Torizo code is banned except during GT Classic category races.

For 100% races, failing to finish the game with 100% will result in a DQ (but players may reload a save made during the run to go back and acquire 100%)
 
For Low% races players are encouraged to have a safety save at Red Tower with just 5 missiles collected in case they accidentally pick up 'charge missiles'. Saving in this room and then loading the backup save is acceptible and will not be considered a DQ. Ending the race with 15% will be considered a DQ and will result in a 3 hour time being given.


SCHEDULING

Please do your best to communicate with your scheduled opponent and get your match played before the deadline. Because we are using a swiss format we can not allow races to be played after the deadline. If both players are considered no-shows (worst case), both players will be forfeited in order of seed. Also please schedule your matches at least 24 hours ahead of time. We may not be able to restream the match with too short of notice.
 

RESTREAM INFO

Matches will be streamed to twitch.tv/speedgaming (or one of the alternate speedgaming channels) along with commentary. If you would like to be considered to commentate a match please use the tournament signup form (https://tiny.cc/smtourneysignup). Organizers reserve the right to remove people from commentary should their commentary be deemed inappropriate and/or offensive.
 

Each race will get a 2 hour time block scheduled for the restream (depending on scheduling constraints this may be shortened or extended). If your race runs over time the race will continue but the restream may stop (DO NOT STOP YOUR STREAM).
